Did you know 1 in 13 children have food allergies? This certainly makes trick or treating hard for many children and families! Whether they have celiac disease, a nut allergy or are negatively effected by artificial ingredients, it can be very discouraging for a child to be left out of the fun on Halloween.

This is where the Teal Pumpkin Project comes in.

You may have noticed some houses have teal pumpkins on their porch, if not it’s time to spread it through your neighborhood! After a quick look at FARE’s Teal Pumpkin Project page, it’s easy to become excited about. All you have to do is place a teal pumpkin (you can spray paint it) on your front porch, maybe with a cute sign explaining how it works, and then have some non-food trinkets on hand for the kids. Done! Now when families see that teal pumpkin they know that they can trick or treat at your house without fear of allergic reactions.

This makes for a healthier and happier Halloween for all. Even if your kids don’t struggle with allergies, it can be nice to cut back on the sugar. With the prices of candy these days it can actually be cheaper too! A friend of ours purchased a few bags of party trinkets at the dollar store for $3.00. She had a total of 100 trinkets. Compare this to a bag of 50 pieces of candy for $5.00! This Teal Pumpkin Project is looking better and better. Amazon is also a great place for children’s party favors.

We recently learned about this wonderful movement and couldn’t help but share! If this had been around when we were kids we would have actually been able to enjoy the trick or treating festivities. Let’s spread the word, and the teal pumpkins, 😉 to every neighborhood! Here’s to a healthier and happier Halloween!

  2. I love the idea of having a cute sign to go with the teal pumpkin. This is very nice for kids with allergies, and sensory issues too!
